The Housing Authority's Board of Commissioners recognized The Jordan Downs Community Advisory Committee (JD CAC) during a Board meeting on November 26, 2010. The JD CAC has been a key partner in the Jordan Downs redevelopment project. The preferred Master Plan was shared with the residents and the community during a public meeting on November 7, 2009. The plan reflects the hard work and contribution of the residents who participated in coming up with a sustainable plan for their new home.

The JD CAC is made up of JD residents and community activists. The group has been an integral part of the outreach process serving as the voice of the residents, making sure that everyone has an opportunity to participate in the planning phase. Several JD CAC members made public comments during the Board meeting.
Jordan Downs resident Evelyn Warren spoke on behalf of the JDCAC and shared her vision of the new Jordan Downs. “Now that I’ve become a member of the JDCAC, I have a vision for the redevelopment of Jordan Downs. My vision is seeing green grass all around, beautifully colored blossomed flowers, fathers leaving to go to work, mothers walking their children to school. Seniors in their own section working in their garden, sitting around waving, just having a nice time. Families going to church on Sunday mornings, also community gatherings where everyone is laughing, eating, playing games and helping each other. Young youth helping seniors whenever asked." Henry Bloomfield, Richard Alford and Leticia Martinez also spoke on behalf of the JDCAC and shared similar ideas.
HACLA President and CEO, Rudolf Montiel, personally recognized JDCAC member Arturo Ibarra, CEO of Watts Central Latino Organization, commending his role as “One of the people for many years who helped our Latino resident navigated the difficult and challenging waters of living in public housing in Watts.”
The Housing Authority will continue to work with our project partners including the JD CAC to create a vibrant urban village in Watts that will serve as a catalyst for lasting change. |
