Motivated Mothers: Rethink Your Drink

On February 24, 2011 the Motivated Mothers of Jordan Downs got together for a healthy “Rethink Your Drink” session. The moms talked about what you decide to drink may not always be the healthiest option for you and the best way to know is by reading the bottle’s label listing all the ingredients. Many drinks contain excessive amounts of sugar, artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup which are not good for you. A visual demonstration of the amount of the sugar contained in various drinks was made by having the quantity shown in clear plastic bottles. This was a revelation to the moms on how much sugar is consumed in one drink. The session provided ways to calculate how much sugar is in a drink and making sensible choices for you and your family. The best advice is opting for moderate amounts of sugar. When possible you can reduce or eliminate sugar by following these simple tips:

1) For liquid refreshments, choose WATER or MILK ( 2% or 1% not whole)

2) For a soft drink, choose SMALL or REGULAR

3) For a sensible (sweet) snack, choose FRUIT

4) For a sensible, satisfying dessert, choose to SHARE

5) For a lower sugar intake, choose SUGAR-FREE

Ms. Ebony Fuller and her team from a Network for a Healthy California in the Los Angeles Region led the session with the moms. These sessions are an initiative supported by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Thanks to Ms. Fuller for providing this information
