         Human Capital Plan: Accomplishments, Progress and Highlights in Education

ü  HACLA and local schools are partners in transforming the educational landscape in Watts and increasing options for families. Parents have access to an array of educational institutions in Watts:

·         Green Dot and the Mayor’s Partnership for Los Angeles at Jordan Downs High School

·         The Alliance Cindy and Bill Simon Technology Academy High School

·         St. Lawrence of Brindisi Elementary School

·         Verbum Dei High School

 

ü  To foreground the leadership role of youth at Jordan Downs, several programs are available:

·         Youth Leadership Council

·         Youth Action Squad

·         The Digital Connectors

 

ü  To support and sustain the academic success of children and youth, SHIELDS for Families Inc, Inc. offers an array of on-site supportive education services:  

·         A high school equivalency course that is accredited by Century High School of Santa Monica, CA

·         A parent education course

·         An early childhood education course

 

ü  One of the largest public school turnaround projects in the nation, the Mayor’s Partnership for Los Angeles (PLAS) is working with Griffith-Joyner Elementary School, Edwin Markham Middle School, and Jordan Downs High School to increase academic achievement among children and youth. All three schools have reported growth in the 2012 API Scores.

Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School (Pre K-5th) 

Florence Griffith Joyner commits to developing culturally sensitive citizens equipped with academic, as well as social skills to become life long learners in order to compete and contribute in this diverse world. Located at 1963 E. 103rd St., Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary is adjacent to Jordan Downs community and home to many elementary aged residents.

Markham Middle School (6th-8th)

Markham Middle School located at 1650 East 104th Street, strives to provide a safe and supportive community of parents and staff committed to engaging students with rigorous curriculum. Educators and staff also strive to provide challenging instructional activities that will enable them to meet and exceed California Content Standards.  This learning community fosters positive relations and encourages all stakeholders to develop outstanding leadership skills and become life-long learners thereby contributing successfully and positively to our global society. David Starr Jordan High School (9th-12th)


The Jordan High School Community mission looks to foster the growth of all their students into thoughtful, literate adults, possessing the academic, social, and technical skills necessary to think critically, solve problems, and successfully pursue academic and career goals, becoming effective, responsible citizens.

 First five years of a Child's life

About 90 percent of a child's brain develops in that time and 85 percent of a child's intellect, personality and social skills are developed by that age. Tutoring

Under the No Child Left Behind Act, if your child attends a public school that receives Title 1 federal money, and your family qualifies for the federal lunch program, your child may be entitled to receive free tutoring. Getting your GED

The General Educational Development (GED) is the equivalent of a high school diploma for people who did not finish high school To get your GED you need to take an examination. The examination tests knowledge in five subject areas: Language Arts, Writing; Language Arts, Reading; Mathematics; Science; Social Studies. There are many resources that can help you prepare for the test.
